Clearwater River Fishing Guide Service
The Clearwater River is one of the top sport fishing rivers in the lower 48 and gives us 10 months of trophy fishing. This is our bread and butter fishery, as our team will fish for Salmon and Steelhead under our exclusive Clearwater permit. We concentrate our efforts seasonally in this 50-mile stretch from the confluence of the Snake, Clearwater River in Lewiston Idaho to the town of Orofino Idaho. Our Clearwater river is sanctioned by the Idaho Outfitters and guide board that limits the amount of outfitters licensed to operate business on this water and we own one these special permits. Clearwater River Steelhead Fishing
July 15th - March 31st
Clearwater river steelhead fishing is without question the greatest prize offered to anglers on our Clearwater River. The fish known as the Big B-Run attracts anglers to the valley from all over the world. The beauty of this river is we get to fish steelhead for 7 months, which offers our clients some seasonal options. Our catch and release season starts July 15th where we will isolate the lower part of the river as the fish just entered in to the system. The catch and release season will last six weeks until the Oct 15th opener when you can start harvesting fish.
The town of Lewiston grows in size this time of the year attracting fishermen from all over the world. The B Run steelhead living out in the ocean and returning to the Clearwater three years later often weigh in the 20-25 pound range. It’s not uncommon to have double - digit hookups and on many occasions land 20-30 fish in a day.
Our guides will spend the entire 10 months chasing these fish and know every rock in the river. With each seasonal change, fishing techniques and approach can vary. Early in the fall most of our hookups take place in shallow, riffled water. Fish will chase our baits and can’t seem to resist the sweet taste of our cured roe. Side drifting is without a doubt the most effective method when catching steelhead on our river.
As fall weather changes and temperatures start to drop the fish will make their way to the deep holes. By now, the fall Chinook salmon have moved up river and will make room for the pods of steelhead to occupy new waters. This time of the year can be a very exciting time for our clients as the fish start to pod up and put our light line tackle to test.
The Clearwater River is very fortunate to have our hatchery programs that help facilitate this 7-month steelhead fishery. Without the Nez Perce tribe and the state and federal hatchery programs, our fishing today wouldn’t be what it is. We are very rich in our steelhead runs and fortunate to be part of this special fishery. Our Clearwater fish have traveled 450 miles from out in the ocean. Their journey starts from Astoria Oregon and make their way up the Columbia and Snake River to the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater in the town of Lewiston Idaho. These are a very tough and resilient fish as anyone that has hooked in to one of these brutes can attest. They are very good to eat and even better smoked. We offer a service to smoke, package, and ship your fish.
This is our most popular fishery and has 5 guides available to offer to our clients. All our guides are coast guard certified, insured, bonded, and have first aid certification. Our team takes our fishing clients very serious.
We understand the responsibility of taking care of our fishing guests and providing them with a memorable experience. Our company motto More than Fishing is just that. We focus on the entire adventure. Our guides will work hard for our clients and will coach each fisherman into becoming a better one. We can assure that on each trip you will have a Stott’s fishing guide team member as your captain. We don’t contract out other guides from other business and we won’t hook and hand you a fish. It’s our obligation to you!
Clearwater River Salmon Fishing
April – June
The Clearwater River Chinook Spring fishing kicks off in late April with the arrival of fish to the mouth of the Clearwater River, better known as the confluence where the Snake and Clearwater meet. Thousands and thousands of Springer’s will migrate up the Clearwater River to their spawning grounds.
The state offers us outfitters a quota of fish to be caught by our clients which most of the time gives us excellent fishing in to the 2nd week of June. These fish are well known for their superb taste and hard fight. The season also coincides with some warm weather and beautiful scenery. Our hatchery programs have been the back- bone of our wonderful runs offering our guides 2 full months of salmon fishing.
The Clearwater River gets a lot bigger this time of the year with snow melt and run off. Our normal fall and winter water flows of 5,000 cfs can rise up to 30,000 cfs. We fish for salmon the same way we do our steelhead. Hole hop till we get on a pod and fish on! If the flows permit, we’ll back bounce eggs and in higher water we’ll back-troll divers and bait, walking our sweet baits right into their living room.
Needless to say, this is a very small window of opportunity to enjoy some great weather, scenery, and fabulous fishing for Springer’s on the Clearwater. Our Clearwater Salmon fishing is becoming more and more popular among anglers that have been traveling greater distances to catch fish. Our lodging accommodations along with our excellent team of guides make this a great trip.
