Clearwater River Winter Steelhead Fishing

The Clearwater River winter steelhead season is without a doubt our busiest part of the year. Our guides are in full force and the fish have pushed in. Other rivers in the Northwest fight blowouts due to heavy rainfall but not the Clearwater. Steady water flow from the North Fork with occasional snowmelt creates a glacier green color that is perfect for side drifting. Our exclusive permit to fish the river offers us 7 months of trophy steelhead fishing. The Clearwater B- run steelhead are some of the largest in the World and average 12-13 pounds. Our guides live on this river and know every nook and cranny. Our jet boats are designed to fish where most anglers won’t go. This medium sized river is considered one of the finest steelhead rivers in the lower 48. We are very fortunate to be able to operate our business here and our clients know that too. If you are looking for an excellent steelhead fishing adventure then the winter season is for you.

Temps: Lewiston Idaho lies in the middle of the banana belt region offering us mild winters and little precipitations. Lewiston is only 700 feet above sea level and not what the typical Idaho weather can be like. We have such diverse weather that sometimes in January it can be in the 50’s. There are times that it can get frigid and those times are when our guides bring out our propane heaters for our clients.  We have sunshine most every day!

Fishing Techniques: Winter steelhead fishing offers so many different ways to catch fish. Fishing from our jet boats definitely has its advantages. Covering lots of water side drifting with eggs and shrimp is no doubt the most effective method on winter steelhead. 9’6 Edge rods with light line and tackle is a thrill when hooking in to a giant Clearwater fish. There are times when the water gets low and clear that we take out our back trolling and bobber dog rods to isolate spooky and lethargic fish. All our guides are diverse in their techniques and will happy to accommodate your style. We’ll always give you our professional advice to what is working but we do appreciate client’s feedback and requests.

What to expect: Clearwater River steelhead fishing is for the adrenaline junky. There’s no other river in the Northwest that offers 7 months of trophy fishing like we have on the Clearwater. It’s not uncommon to have double-digit days and occasionally land a 20-pound fish. The town of Orofino Idaho is the northern tip of our river permit while Lewiston Idaho represents the lower stretch. 50 miles of fun filled line-ripping fun. Come and see why anglers fly in from all over the world to fish with us.

What we provide: With all our guided adventures we supply the finest Gary Loomis Edge Rods, Diawa reels, bait and tackle, beverages, and cook a hot BBQ lunch for our clients. We'll clean and bag your fish for your return back home. If flying in to Lewiston Idaho, we can provide lodging and transportation that will accommodate your group. Book an all-inclusive trip and get your adventure video taped and produced for each group member.
